Is Disney World’s Star Wars Hotel Discount A Good Deal?

UPDATE: Disney has announced that Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will permanently close this fall. Note that this discount may no longer be available for booking after May 26th, 2023. Please contact Disney directly for more information.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser opened in Disney World in 2022 as the first-ever Star Wars hotel. However, calling it a “hotel” isn’t necessarily correct. The Galactic Starcruiser is a 2-night fully immersive experience where you board the Halcyon Starship and live out your very own Star Wars story.

But, you’ll be paying a pretty penny to be the Luke Skywalker of your own Star Wars movie

The cost to stay at the Galactic Starcruiser has become one of the most talked about aspects of the experience, but there’s one group of Disney fans that have access to the first Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser discount EVER — Disney Vacation Club (DVC) Members!

Right now, Disney Vacation Club Members are able to book their 2-night stay at the Galactic Starcruiser for 30% off the original Points Chart values on select dates between January and September 2023.

The following voyages qualify for the DVC discount:

  • January 11th – 13th, 2023
  • January 17th – 19th, 2023
  • January 19th – 21st, 2023
  • January 21st – 23rd, 2023
  • January 25th – 27th, 2023
  • January 31st – February 2nd, 2023
  • February 12th – 14th, 2023
  • February 28th – March 2nd, 2023
  • March 2nd – 4th, 2023

Note that more discounted voyage dates have been announced. See a full breakdown of points per voyage here.

Note that you can only book one standard cabin (or room) with this offer and your reservation must be made prior to the last 4 months of your Use Year for stays during that Use Year. You can use a combination of DVC Points and cash to pay for the voyage at the discounted rate, however, points must be used to pay for at least one member staying in the cabin. And, keep in mind that a nonrefundable $95 transaction fee will be applied to your reservation upon booking.

Now, here’s the big question — is this actually a good deal? According to the Points Chart, the cheapest points per night for the first and second adults is 282. In general, you can expect to get about $16-18 per point on the rental market. So, 282 points at a 30% discount would be roughly 197 points. In dollars, that equals out to your stay at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser costing somewhere between $3,152-$3,546.

Let’s say that these two adults plan a 2-night trip to the Disney World theme parks instead. They decide to go to Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT (the three most expensive parks to visit). This would cost them somewhere between $884 to $1,094 for single-park tickets, or between $1,284 to $1,512 for park hopper tickets. Tack on a stay at one of Disney’s Value Resorts for roughly $230 to $500 and you could have a 2-night, 3-day vacation for well below what you’d pay at the Galactic Starcruiser.

Of course, the Galactic Starcruiser also includes all your meals and snacks, free Lightning Lane access for the two Star Wars attractions in Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and a one-of-a-kind Star Wars experience that you can’t get anywhere else. With all those things considered, this DVC discount might be one that you want to take advantage of.

So, it may not be a huge amount of money that you’re saving when you compare the cost to a more traditional Disney World vacation. But, any savings on a voyage onboard the Halcyon is a pretty big deal considering there haven’t been any others since it opened in March 2021.
